Description
The introduction of carbide lathe tools has greatly simplified wood turning! With Simple Woodturning Tools it’s all turning and no sharpening so you can start turning as soon as your box arrives. Gone forever is the long learning curve where precise angles and special tool presentation techniques must be mastered. Also gone is the need to master many sharpening techniques before you can even begin to turn, not to mention the expense of all that sharpening equipment. This set contains: Mid Size Simple Rougher (MSR) - Typically the first tool used to quickly rough a block to a cylinder and shape the profile. Mid Size Simple Turner & Hollower (MSTH) - A great all around carbide wood turning tool that's the simplest turning & hollowing tool to master on the market today. Carbide cutter is 1/2" round with a flat top. Mid Size Simple 55° Detailer (MS55D) - For fine detail work such as beads and coves in spindles. Perfect for cutting the dovetail tenon needed for holding a block in a 4 jaw chuck. T15 & T10 Torx star tip wrenches are included to rotate cutters. Tool details: Material: CNC machined 3/8" solid stainless steel Overall tool length: 9" Handle tang: 2" x 3/8" diameter Each tool is designed with a square shaft making it easy to keep tools flat on the tool rest. Mid size tools are recommended for turnings under 6" in diameter. Handle Details: CNC machined from solid aircraft aluminum for durability and balance Beautifully powder coated for a brilliant finish to last for years Overall length: 12", Outside diameter: 1 1/8", Opening for tool: 3/8" diameter Tools can be easily changed by loosening the two stainless steel set screws with the included 1/8" Allen key 100% USA made by American craftsman Most beautiful lathe tool handles on the market Benefits of Carbide Simple Woodturning Tools Simple to use for all skill levels Woodturning is fast and more enjoyable You can focus on your project and not on techniques or sharpening No long learning curve No expensive sharpening equipment Begin turning as soon as your box arrives! The Mid Size Simple Turner and Hollower - Simple & Effective Ideally suited for small and mid size projects where the full size tools as just to clumsy. Some examples include pens, Christmas ornaments, bottle stoppers, handles and bowls, just to name a few. To use the Mid Size Simple Turner & Hollower just follow these 3 simple steps. Position the tool rest as close to the work as possible so the carbide cutter is at the lathe center line. Place the tool on the tool rest with the tool shaft parallel with the floor. While securely holding the tool slowly move the carbide cutter into the work. Because of the small tool shaft the tool should not extend past the tool rest more than 3 inches. As you begin to move the tool across the turning block you'll see how fast these carbide tools cut and how much simpler roughing is. It won’t be long until your block is a cylinder and you'll get your first look at what your turning will become. In addition to roughing you'll notice the mid size Simple Rougher is a great tool for shaping the outside radius of a bowl and for turning beads on spindle turnings. Straight line turning is also simplified and it's also a great tool for hollowing out the inside of a bowl. If you're making a box or other vessel that requires square inside corners and a flat bottom this is the tool of choice for that as well. Read more The Mid Size Simple 55° Detailer - Intricate Detail Work The design of the mid size Simple 55° Detailer lends itself perfectly to small intricate detail work such as turning beads, cover finials, boxes and other final details on spindle and bowl turnings. The special shape of the diamond cutter allows access to tight places where the cutter on other tools simply can't be used. Also it is also very useful for making outside chuck tenons and reverse angle inside cuts so bowls can be chucked with dovetail jaws. If you use a 4 jaw chuck to hold your turnings this tool is a must and will be used on every turning. As you use this tool you will soon see the wonderful small details that can added to your turnings. It will quickly become one of your favorite tools and used regularly. Full disclosure: As a former owner of a Woodworking store I have years of experience with Easy Wood Tools and believe strongly in the value of this type of tool for a wide set of turners. I bought these tools because I wanted tools for my new home shop that I could use to teach new turners, but wanted to reduce the cost to me since I use Carter and Son M42 HSS tools exclusively myself. I also wanted to buy American. So I ordered a set of the three shapes of tools that I am familiar with (square,, round and diamond) - in the Medium size, along with the handle for them. Here's my initial reaction:The tools themselves are pretty much the same length as the EWT ones. The build quality and finish seems excellent. They came nicely packaged in bubble wrap with slip on plastic "booties" over the cutting ends. The handle fits the tools well and is nicely finished also. For me the handle is way too small in diameter and too short - the EWT mid sized tools have a 16" handle, where this one is only 12". Unfortunately the folks at Harrison make a 16" handle but don't offer a sleeve or bushing to allow it to accept the ⅜" shaft mid-sized tools. I plan on turning a larger handle and using the Jimmy Clewes Quick Release cam lock mechanism or my Robust ER25 collet based handle. A reason I think this is so important is that (based on years of beginners classes with EWT) I find that beginners need the extra leverage of a longer handle to control the tool, especially when getting into bowl turning where they extend further off the tool rest.As far as the cut quality - I used Maple since its a well behaved wood for demo'ing. It felt like the finish of the wood was slightly less smooth on the square tool than the EWT. But that could be because I am used to using a 2" radius "square" not the straight sided one that came on the tool - and the radius allows one to do a better finishing cut. I have ordered the 2" radius cutter and will update this review after I get a chance to try it. The round cutter worked well and so did the diamond one. Both seemed competitive with EWT. The diamond one does have a extremely sharp point that can be very useful, The bottom line on this is that there are things you can do with the sharp point you can't do with a EWT detailer (which has a radius at the tip of its diamond), and vice versa. One thing perplexing to me is that although the square and round tools are both Mid sized, they use different sized cutters and therefore different screws (and therefore two different wrenches). The round tool is a larger diameter than a mid size EWT, the square seems about the same size as EWT. It is nice that the screws use Torx wrenches rather than simple hex of EWT.Overall, I am encouraged by the quality of these tools. I look forward to a bit more usage and also a chance to sharpen the cutters with a diamond stone. I will update this review later, but at this time I would strongly recommend these.UPDATE #1: After more usage a difference I note is in regards to the diamond shape tool: an EWT tool can cut quite easily along the straight side of the diamond, these tools do not cut well that way. I notice that the EWT tool has a different edge angle, and perhaps more importantly has the supporting steel of the shaft cut back more to allow the edge to be applied more easily.Product is solid - easy to change out. Have to watch wood dust filling the set screw heads that tighten the turn bars into the handle. Well balanced and easy to hold and use.Tips are good - just wish the diamond tip was pointed not rounded over to help with level of details I wanted to impart on the wood.Just picked up some diamond credit card plates to sharpen/hone the bits. Will be trying out other 3rd party carbide tips for the square scraper as the Diamond bit is not the same size as many of the replacements - it's shorter! 22 mm vs the 28 mm for the standard replacement bitsI typically don't write reviews but hopefully someone can learn from my mistake. After investing good money into standard turning tools, which I was not happy with, I decided to give carbide cutters a shot. These are great quality tools that have improved my work tremendously. As I was trying to be cost conscious I mistakenly went with this set with only 1 handle that I would change as need be. After 1 week, the set screw was stripped and I can no longer remove the rougher. Fast forward to now, I am forced to purchase 2 additional handles for $50 each because I wanted to save a few bucks upfront by not buying the full set with 3 handles. I gave this product 4 stars and not 5, although the product is great. I am very disappointed the set screw would strip so easily strictly from use, and not over tightening. In summary - spend the extra money up front to get a full set with 3 handles or you'll be back buying them later at a full price. After using cheap HSS tools that I bought many years ago, I finally broke down and bought this set as my first carbide set. One handle and switching out bits seemed like it would be a nuisance, but it only takes a few seconds (there are two Allen set screws involved) and I started with the roughing bit. What a confidence builder this was! I mounted a piece of oak between centers are started hogging away with wild abandon! This set puts my cheap HSS tools to complete shame. I am going to get a couple of sets of carbide tips to ensure I’m always using sharp tools, and I’m also thinking my sharpening grinder may be gathering dust for a while...Well made, sturdy, nice weighted handle and easy exchanging the different tools. As someone still very new to turning, my feedback and ratings should be taken with a grain of salt. That said, I'm no stranger to quality and this set is nothing short of top notch. Everything is solidly machined and built, fits well together, easy to use. Fully assembled it's noticeably heavier than wooden-handled counterparts, but not fatiguing. To me the weight serves as a sign of its build quality. Overall, it's a fantastic value and not only when compared to other carbide tool sets. I highly recommend buying this set if you're in the market.I purposely purchased this set because I knew I wanted to make two handles as my first turning projects, and these tools all worked well. The learning curve with carbide is evidently significantly lessened, so I was pleased with the ability to shape and cut the handles. I would recommend for the price and usability.Have not used yet, but I have been turning for 25 to 30 years. They look good that is why I got them. Turning as long as I have you have your special turning tools. Cutters is what I am concerned about. Will I have to go back to the company to buy their cutters? How long will the cutters last?
